Background of the Study
Instagram meme culture in Nigeria represents a dynamic arena of language innovation where humor, irony, and cultural commentary converge. Memes, as digital artifacts, encapsulate creative language use through wordplay, neologisms, and unconventional syntactic structures. Nigerian users leverage Instagram’s visual-centric platform to produce memes that blend images with succinct, often witty, textual content (Oluwaseun, 2023). This fusion of visual and verbal elements spurs rapid lexical and grammatical experimentation, resulting in language forms that challenge traditional norms. Meme culture not only reflects current socio-political sentiments but also drives linguistic change by disseminating novel expressions and humor-inflected language across digital communities. The study investigates how Instagram meme culture catalyzes language innovation, examining the processes by which new words and expressions are created, popularized, and integrated into everyday discourse. It further explores the impact of digital humor on language use, identity construction, and cultural representation in Nigeria (Adeniyi, 2024). By focusing on this emerging form of digital communication, the research seeks to understand the transformative potential of memes in shaping contemporary language practices.
Statement of the Problem
Although Instagram meme culture is recognized as a significant force in Nigerian online language innovation, there is limited systematic research examining its mechanisms and impact. The rapid diffusion of memes and their inherent linguistic creativity pose challenges for traditional linguistic analysis. Current literature does not sufficiently address how memes foster the creation of new lexical items and syntactic constructions, nor does it explore the broader sociocultural implications of these innovations. This gap in knowledge hampers our ability to understand the transformative role of digital humor in language evolution. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a detailed examination of meme-driven language innovation on Instagram, thereby offering insights into its effect on Nigerian digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).
